Barrel of Monkeys is a fast-paced, hand-eye coordination game where players race to hook a chain of monkeys without dropping any. It’s simple to learn, fun for all ages, and great for solo or group play. Here’s a breakdown of the rules:

How to Play Barrel of Monkeys

Objective

Be the player to create the longest chain of monkeys without dropping any.

Components

• 1 plastic barrel
• 12 plastic monkeys (typically all the same color)
  (Some modern versions include more monkeys and multiple colors.)

Setup

1. Open the barrel and dump out all the monkeys onto a flat surface.
2. Make sure the monkeys are spread out and not linked together.

Game Play

1. Choose a Starting Player
   Decide who will go first. You can roll a die, flip a coin, or let the youngest player start.
2. Start Linking
   The first player picks up one monkey by the arm and tries to hook another monkey onto its arm without using their other hand or touching any monkeys except the one in play.
3. Build Your Chain
   Continue adding monkeys to your chain one at a time, using only the monkey at the bottom of the chain to hook the next one.
4. Dropping a Monkey Ends Your Turn
   Your turn ends immediately if:
   • Any monkey in your chain falls off, or
   • You fail to hook the next monkey.
5. Count Your Monkeys
   At the end of your turn, count how many monkeys you successfully linked. That’s your score for the round.
6. Next Player’s Turn
   Pass the barrel to the next player and let them try to beat your chain.

Winning the Game

• Standard Game:
  The player who creates the longest chain in one turn wins.
• Alternative Version:
  Each player gets three turns, and the total number of monkeys linked across those turns determines the winner.
• Solo Play:
  Try to link all 12 monkeys. Beat your best time or highest chain length.
