Bamboo Game Structure
The game is played over 4 rounds, each consisting of 4 phases:
- Spring – Gain incense and a gift.
- Summer – Visit temples and take actions.
- Autumn – Gain favor from Spirits.
- Winter – Feed your family, reset, and prepare.
At the end of the fourth Winter, players tally final scores.
Phase 1: Spring – Receive Incense and Gifts
- Shuffle Gift tiles and reveal 1 per player.
- In turn order:
- Each player takes their incense stick from the leftmost incense space.
- Selects a face-up Gift tile, performs its action, then returns it face down on the stack.
Phase 2: Summer – Visit Temples and Perform Actions
Each player may:
- Check if you must Pass: If you have no incense, you must Pass and skip the rest of Summer.
- Visit a Temple: Move your Action Marker to a new temple space (not the one from your last turn) that has Bamboo Shoots.
- Make an Offering: Place incense sticks equal to the number of Bamboo Shoots at that temple (or as many as you can). Place incense in the corresponding colored temple on the main board.
- Incense placed in the wrong color temple costs 1 coin per stick.
- Activate Bamboo Shoots: Place all Shoots from the chosen temple into the reed field (max 2 per stalk). Resolve actions for as many Shoots as incense offered.
- Receive New Bamboo Shoots: Push Shoots downward into the shaded area. For each pushed-off Shoot, place it on your board in a matching-colored temple.
- If there’s no space in the matching temple, choose another temple.
