How to Play Capture the Flag

Objective

Be the first team to capture the opposing team’s flag and bring it safely back to your own side.

Setup

  • Players: Ideally 6 or more, split into two equal teams
  • Field: Large open area divided into two halves (one for each team)
  • Equipment:
    • 2 flags (any visible object like bandanas, cones, or beanbags)
    • Optional: cones or markers to set boundaries and jails

Field Layout

  • Split the play area into two equal territories
  • Each team hides their flag somewhere visible in their own territory (it must not be buried or completely hidden)
  • Each side has a jail area to hold opponents who are tagged

Rules

1. Teams Stay in Their Territory

Players can cross into the opponent’s side but risk getting tagged.

2. Tagging

If you’re in the enemy’s territory and get tagged, you go to their jail.

3. Freeing Teammates

To free someone from jail, tag them without getting tagged yourself. Both players get a free walk back to their side.

4. Capturing the Flag

Enter the enemy territory, locate their flag, and bring it back to your side without getting tagged. If you’re tagged while holding it, the flag is returned to its original spot.

5. Winning the Game

The game ends when one team successfully captures the other team’s flag and brings it back to their territory.

Optional Rules and Variants

Time Limit: If no team wins in the time limit, the game ends in a draw or goes to sudden death.

Safe Zones: Temporary zones near the flag or jail where players can’t be tagged.

Flag Passing: Players can pass the flag to teammates once it’s been taken.

Multiple Flags: Teams hide more than one flag, increasing complexity.
