How to Play Classic Charades
Components Needed
Classic Charades requires no commercial game or branded materials. You only need:
- Slips of paper or index cards
- Pens or markers
- A bowl or container for the clues
- A sand timer or phone timer (60 seconds)
- Optional: scoring pad or paper
Goal of the Game
One player acts out a word or phrase without speaking. The rest of the group tries to guess it. Both the actor and the correct guesser earn points. The player or team with the highest score wins.
Setting Up
- Create Your Clue Cards
Write down a list of words or phrases for the game. These can be movies, actions, animals, objects, phrases, or mixed categories (See Extreme Difficulty for movies, book, and tv shows). Fold and place them into a bowl. - Choose the Turn Order
Pick someone to go first. For a balanced game, give every player at least two turns as the actor. - Set Up the Timer
Have a 60-second timer ready and visible.
How to Play
- The current actor draws one clue from the bowl and keeps it hidden.
- When everyone is ready, flip the timer. The actor begins acting immediately.
- No talking, no pointing at objects, no spelling words. Only gestures, movement, and body language.
- The guessers may shout out unlimited answers during the 60 seconds.
- As soon as the group correctly guesses the clue, the actor draws another clue and continues.
- Keep acting and guessing until the timer runs out.
- After time ends, tally the number of correct guesses for that turn.
Scoring
- 1 point to the actor for every correctly guessed word or phrase.
- 1 point to the guesser who guessed it first.
- Record scores at the end of each turn.
Winning:
At the end of the game, the player (or team) with the most points wins. Feel free to announce a “Best Actor” or “Top Guesser” for fun awards.

- The Expanse
- Twin Peaks
- The Handmaid’s Tale
Strategy Tips
For Actors
- Break the word or phrase into parts.
- Use clear, exaggerated movements.
- Establish categories with universal gestures (movie, book, song, person, animal, action).
- Act fast. The more clues you get through, the more points you earn.
For Guessers
- Shout out fast, even if unsure.
- Think broadly at first, then narrow down.
- Pay attention to category cues.
- Build momentum. Once you’re in sync with the actor, the guesses come easier.
Advanced Rules (Optional)
Pass Rule
Once per turn, the actor may pass on a clue that’s too difficult. Simply draw a new one and continue.
Team Play
Divide into two teams. Teams alternate turns. Only the acting team guesses during their turn.
Silent Round
For extra challenge, remove sound effects and allow gestures only.
