How to Play Speed Charades
What’s in the Box
- 280 Speed Charades cards containing 1,400 total words and phrases
- Scorepad
- Pencil
- Rules sheet
Object of the Game
Teams race to act out and correctly guess the words on their card before the other team. After 10 rounds, the team with the most points wins.
Setup
- Split into teams of three or more and sit together.
- Choose team names and write them on the scorepad.
- Place the deck of Speed Charades cards face down in a central spot where both teams can reach them easily.
- Each team chooses a player to act first. Everyone will get a turn.
How to Play
1. Prepare the Cards
Both actors draw a card from the top of the deck and review the five words or phrases.
The two actors may agree to “pass” one time and draw fresh cards. Both actors must agree to pass. If one prefers the original card, both must keep the first card.
2. Begin the Round
When everyone is ready, both actors start acting at the same time without speaking or mouthing any words.
Teams try to guess four of the five words on their card. Actors may act out the words in any order and can skip back and forth as needed. A good approach is to start with the easiest words first.
3. Scoring the Round
The first team to correctly guess four of the five words earns one point. Mark the scorepad.
4. Winning the Game
After 10 rounds, the team with the most points wins the game.
Additional Rules
Tie Breaker
If teams are tied at the end of 10 rounds, each team picks its strongest actor. Both draw three cards and choose one card for the opposing team to act out. The first team to guess four words wins the tiebreaker.
Silence Rule
If an actor talks or mouths part of a word, that word becomes invalid. If two words become invalid, it becomes impossible to reach four correct guesses, making the round unwinnable.
Using objects or people in the room is allowed.
Correct Guess Requirements
Teams must call out the full word or phrase.
Example: If the card says “mopping,” “mop” is not enough.
Stalemate Rule
If neither team can reach four words, start a 30-second timer. When time runs out, the team with the most correct guesses wins the round. If tied, neither team gets a point and both teams mark a dash.
Variations and Other Ways to Play
Five for Five
Teams must guess all five words. The first team to get all five wins the round.
Tag-Team Charades
Players act one word at a time and hand the card off to the next teammate after each correct guess. This continues until four words are guessed. Works best with larger teams of five or more.
Large Groups (12 or More Players)
Play with three or more teams at once. The first team to reach four words earns the point.
Playing with Younger Players
An adult may select easier cards for younger actors. Younger participants can also play as full-time guessers.
Party Tips
Play music between rounds to keep the energy high, but turn it down for each round.
You can also create a homemade Speed Charades trophy for the winning team.
Strategy Tips
- Start with the easiest words to build quick momentum.
- Use clear gestures rather than complicated charades movements.
- Break long words into pieces through simple actions, such as miming a stretching motion for extended verb forms.
- Signal “sounds like” by gently pulling your earlobe.
- If your team gives an almost correct guess, wave them forward to push them toward the right answer.
- When your team gets a word right, point at the guesser to confirm it quickly.
- Avoid overly detailed acting. Simple, bold actions work best when racing the other team.
