Gonggi (also spelled Gongki, Konggi, or 공기놀이) is a traditional Korean children’s game that involves tossing and catching small stones or plastic pieces in increasingly complex patterns. Often compared to jacks, Gonggi is both a test of hand-eye coordination and dexterity.

How to Play Gonggi

Overview

  • Players: 1 or more
  • Ages: 6 and up
  • Items Needed: 5 small Gonggi pieces (traditionally stones, now usually small plastic nuggets)

Objective

The goal is to complete all five stages of Gonggi without dropping any pieces. Players score points by successfully progressing through stages, and failing a stage usually ends your turn.

Equipment

  • 5 Gonggi pieces (ideally similar in size and weight; available in stores or improvised with small pebbles)

Basic Rules & Gameplay

Gonggi is typically played in five stages, which increase in difficulty. The game is played on the ground or a table.

Stage 1: Ones

  1. Scatter the 5 Gonggi pieces lightly on the floor.
  2. Pick up 1 piece and toss it into the air.
  3. While it’s in the air, pick up 1 of the remaining 4 pieces, then catch the falling piece with the same hand.
  4. Repeat until you’ve picked up all 4 pieces (one at a time), always tossing and catching the same piece.

Stage 2: Twos

  1. Scatter the 5 pieces again.
  2. Pick up 1, toss it, and while it’s in the air, pick up 2 pieces at once, then catch the tossed piece.
  3. Repeat for the remaining 2.
    • If you accidentally pick up 3, drop a piece, or miss the catch, your turn ends.

Stage 3: Threes and One

  1. Scatter the pieces.
  2. Toss 1 piece, pick up 3 pieces at once, catch the tossed piece.
  3. Toss again, pick up the final piece, and catch.
    • Some players reverse this order (1 then 3).

Stage 4: All Four

  1. Toss 1 piece into the air.
  2. In one scoop, pick up all 4 remaining pieces and catch the tossed piece.
    • No pauses are allowed.

Stage 5: Back of the Hand

  1. Place all 5 Gonggi pieces in your palm.
  2. Toss them gently into the air and try to catch as many as possible on the back of your hand.
  3. Then toss the ones caught on the back of your hand and catch them again in your palm.
  4. You get a point for each piece successfully caught in your palm.

Scoring (Optional)

  • 1 point per piece caught in Stage 5.
  • Or, keep track of completed rounds. The player who completes the most stages or reaches the highest round wins.

Penalties

If you:

  • Drop a piece,
  • Pick up the wrong number of pieces,
  • Fail to catch the thrown piece in time,

…your turn ends immediately.

In multiplayer games, play proceeds clockwise.

Variations

  • Speed play: Time how fast each player can complete all five stages.
  • Tournament: Play multiple rounds; the player with the most completed sets wins.
  • Advanced Tricks: Some players add creative hand movements or reverse the catch order for fun or bonus points.

Conclusion

Gonggi is a simple yet highly engaging Korean game that’s easy to learn and fun to master. Whether played competitively or casually, it offers a great way to build coordination and focus. It’s perfect for children but enjoyable for adults as well.
