How to Play Horrible Couple: Extra Horrible Edition
Game Overview
Each round creates a three-part comic:
- Question – The setup
- Response – The escalation
- Compromise – The punchline
Points are earned when your Compromise card is chosen as the best ending.
Competitive Mode (3–8 Players)
Goal
Be the first player to earn 3 points.
Components
- 57 Question Cards
- 166 Response Cards
- 215 Compromise Cards
Each deck is shuffled separately.
Setup
- Shuffle the Question, Response, and Compromise decks individually.
- Place them face down in the center of the table.
- Each player draws 5 Compromise cards into their hand. Keep them secret.
- Choose a starting player.
How a Round Works
Step 1: The Judge Prepares
On your turn:
- Set aside your 5 Compromise cards (you won’t use them this round).
- Flip the top Question card face up in front of you.
Step 2: Choose a Response
- Draw the top 3 Response cards.
- Privately choose your favorite.
- Place it face up next to the Question card.
- Discard the other 2 Response cards permanently (they do not return to the deck).
You’ve now created the first two panels of the comic.
Step 3: Other Players Submit Compromises
All other players:
- Select 1 Compromise card from their hand.
- Pass it face down to the judge.
The judge shuffles the submitted cards so identities remain secret.
Step 4: Judge Chooses the Winner
- Turn over each Compromise card.
- Read them aloud.
- Choose the one that best completes the comic.
The player who submitted the winning card reveals themselves and scores 1 point, placing the card face up in front of them.
Reset for Next Round
- All players draw back up to 5 Compromise cards.
- The player to the left becomes the next judge.
- Continue clockwise.
Winning the Game
The first player to reach 3 points wins.
Cooperative Mode (2 Players)
This mode tests how well you understand each other’s sense of humor.

Strategy Tips
Competitive Mode
- Know your judge. Humor is subjective—play to their tastes.
- Save strong cards. Don’t waste your best Compromise early.
- Read the room. Some groups prefer clever wordplay; others prefer chaos.
- Bluff subtly. If you know someone’s humor style, anticipate what they’ll submit.
Cooperative Mode
- Think predictably. Your partner must recognize your humor pattern.
- Discard wisely between rounds. Remove cards your partner would never associate with you.
- Build a shared language. Inside jokes increase streak potential.
- Avoid obvious picks. If your card blends too well with random ones, guessing becomes harder.
