How to Play Prgressive Rummy
Number of Players and Deck Setup
To play Progressive Rummy, you’ll need:
- 2 to 8 players
- Standard 52-card decks with Jokers included (54 cards per deck)
Deck scaling rule:
Add one deck for every two players:
- 2–3 players: 2 decks
- 4–5 players: 3 decks
- 6–7 players: 4 decks
- 8 players: 5 decks
Game Objective
The objective in Progressive Rummy is to be the first player to complete the required melds for each round while minimizing penalty points. After seven rounds, the player with the lowest total score wins the game.
Card Definitions and Meld Types
In Progressive Rummy, there are two primary meld types:
Books
A Book is a group of three cards with the same rank, such as 7♠, 7♦, 7♣.
- Books must contain exactly three cards when initially laid down.
- Jokers and wild cards can substitute for missing ranks.
Runs
A Run is a sequence of four cards in the same suit, like 5♥, 6♥, 7♥, 8♥.
- Runs must contain exactly four cards when first played.
- Aces can be high (after King) or low (before 2), but not both in the same run.
Game Setup
- Shuffle the cards and determine the first dealer.
- Deal cards clockwise, beginning with the player to the dealer’s left.
- Card counts per round increase progressively:

- Place the rest of the cards in the center as the stockpile, and turn one card face-up to start the discard pile.
Progressive Rummy Round Requirements
Each round in Progressive Rummy has a unique meld requirement. To go out, a player must fulfill the exact combination:

Note: Only the player who completes all melds in a round ends it. Other partial melds do not count toward ending the round.
Game Play
Each turn follows the same sequence:
- Draw a card from either the stockpile or the top of the discard pile.
- Play melds or add to existing ones (optional).
- Discard one card to end your turn.
Adding to Melds
Once a meld is on the table, players may:
- Add individual cards to any Book or Run already laid down (yours or another player’s)
- Extend Runs at either end (e.g., add 3♦ or 7♦ to a run of 4♦–6♦)
Joker Substitution Rule
If a Joker is used in a meld, another player may replace it by playing the actual card it represents—returning the Joker to their hand.
Special Rules in Progressive Rummy
- Meld Precision: Books must begin with exactly 3 cards; Runs must start with exactly 4.
- No early melds: Players may not lay down partial melds.
- Melds must match round requirements: You must meet the round’s goal exactly to go out.
- Cards played to existing melds don’t count toward your own contract.
Scoring in Progressive Rummy
At the end of each round, players receive penalty points for cards left in hand. The lower your score, the better.

Example Hand:
- 5♠, 7♠, Joker, A♥, 10♣, K♦
The Joker can be used to complete 5♠, Joker (6♠), 7♠– forming a valid Run.
