How to Play Sorry What?!
Objective
Accumulate points by correctly guessing phrases through lip-reading while wearing noise-canceling headphones. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
Game Components
- 400 Word Cards (over 40,000 possible phrase combinations)
- Custom Noise-Canceling Headphones
- Charging Cable
- Instruction Manual
Player Count & Age
- Players: 2 or more (ideal for 3–10 players)
- Age: 17+ (due to adult content)
Game Duration
- Approximately 20 minutes
Setup
- Divide into Teams: Split players into two teams of equal size.
- Prepare the Cards: Shuffle the deck 1 and deck 2 separately and place them face down in a draw pile.
- Charge the Headphones: Ensure the custom headphones are fully charged using the provided charging cable.
- Using the Headphones: Turn them on by holding the power button located above the words “Sorry What?!”
How to Play
- Choose a Speaker and a Guesser: On each turn, one team selects a Speaker and a Guesser.
- Speaker Draws the Card: The Speaker draws 1 card from each deck and silently reads the top words on both cards.
- Guesser Wears Headphones: The Guesser puts on the noise-canceling headphones, ensuring they cannot hear external sounds. Click the “Sorry What?!” button to start playing the 75 second music (you can adjust the volume using the + and – buttons).
- Lip-Reading Attempt: The Speaker reads the phrase to the Guesser.
- Guessing: The Guesser attempts to interpret the phrase by reading the Speaker’s lips.
- Passing: The Guesser tries to guess the words or phrase but has the option to pass. If the Guesser passes, only the cards that were guessed correctly go into that teams scoring pile (e.g the Guesser guessed one word correctly but then passed, only 1 card goes to that teams scoring pile). If no words were guessed and the Guesser passes, no points are awarded.
- New Cards: After the Guesser passes, the Speaker picks the top 2 cards from each deck, and the process is repeated.
- Time Limit: Each team has a set time ( 75 seconds) to guess as many phrases as possible until the music stops.
- Scoring: Each correctly guessed word earns the team one point.
- Rotate Roles: Teams alternate turns, rotating the roles of Speaker and Guesser among team members.
NOTE: The Speaker must not act out the cards, they can only use their lips!
Winning the Game
After all players have had an opportunity to be the Guesser, tally the points. The team with the most points wins the game.
Tips for Play
- Practice Makes Perfect: Consider a practice round to help players get comfortable with the mechanics.
- Exaggerate Mouth Movements: Speakers should articulate words clearly and exaggerate mouth movements to aid the Guesser.
- Maintain Eye Contact: Guesser should focus on the Speaker’s mouth and maintain eye contact to improve lip-reading accuracy.
