How to Play The Genius Square

Overview

The Genius Square is a competitive puzzle game for 1–2 players, featuring multi-level logic challenges. Each round is a fast-paced race to solve your board using puzzle pieces and blocker placement based on dice rolls.

Setup & Components

Each player gets:

• 1 Game board (6×6 grid labeled A–F and 1–6)
• 9 Colorful puzzle pieces
• 7 Blocker tokens
• Access to the 7 dice

Also included:

• Some puzzle pieces have white square markers on one side, used only at higher difficulty levels (Starter and above).
• There are five difficulty levels: Junior, Starter, Master, Wizard, and Expert.

Difficulty Levels and Piece Restrictions

As the difficulty increases, certain numbered puzzle pieces are not allowed to be placed adjacent (side-by-side) to each other, although they may still touch at corners.

Use the white square marker side of the affected pieces to indicate these restrictions:

Level	Piece Adjacency Restrictions
Junior	No restrictions; all pieces may touch
Starter	Pieces 1 and 2 may not touch side-by-side
Master	Pieces 1, 2, and 3 may not touch side-by-side
Wizard	Pieces 2, 3, and 4 may not touch side-by-side
Expert	Pieces 1, 2, 3, and 4 may not touch side-by-side

Ensure restricted pieces are placed face-up, showing the white square marker.

How to Play

The following rules apply at all difficulty levels:

1. Roll all 7 dice.
   Each die shows a grid coordinate (e.g., A6, B2). These 7 coordinates determine where blockers must be placed on the board.
2. Place the 7 blocker tokens on the matching squares of your grid.
3. Race to complete your puzzle!
   Use the 9 puzzle pieces to fill in the remaining open spaces on your board. Pieces must stay within the grid and not overlap blockers or other pieces. Follow any adjacency rules based on your difficulty level.
4. Winning the round:
   The first player to completely fill their grid wins the round.

Competitive Match Rules

For longer competitive play, a match consists of several games:

• Both players begin at the Junior level (no restrictions).
• When a player wins a round, they advance to the next difficulty level.
• The opponent stays at their current level.
• Roll the dice again to begin the next round.

The first player to complete the Expert level and win at that level wins the entire match.
