Ubongo! Rules and Instructions

Game Components:

  • 4 sets of 12 tiles
  • 36 puzzle boards (432 different puzzles)
  • 1 die
  • 1 hourglass
  • 1 cloth bag
  • 1 game round track
  • 58 gems (19 sapphires/blue, 19 ambers/brown, 10 rubies/red, 10 emeralds/green)

Before playing, place all gems into the cloth bag.

Setup:

  • Each player receives a set of 12 tiles, one tile of each color.
  • At the start of each round, each player takes a new puzzle board from the stack.
  • The specific puzzle to solve on each board is determined by rolling the die.
  • Immediately after rolling the die, flip the hourglass to start the round timer.

Gameplay:

  • All players race simultaneously to place a predetermined set of tiles onto the light-colored placement area on their puzzle boards, covering it completely without overlapping or extending beyond the borders.
  • Tiles can be rotated or flipped to fit the pattern perfectly.
  • The first player to complete their puzzle shouts “Ubongo!” and immediately takes a gem from the bag.
  • The two fastest players also earn a bonus gem from the game round track.
  • Players who finish later before the timer runs out take one gem from the bag, while players who don’t finish in time receive no gems that round.

Winning the Game:

After 9 rounds, the player with the most valuable gem collection wins.

Preparation:

  • Choose difficulty:
    • The puzzle boards have two sides: the easy side shows puzzles requiring 3 tiles, the harder side shows puzzles requiring 4 tiles.
    • For your first game, use the easy side (3-tile puzzles).
  • Shuffle and stack the puzzle boards face down (tasks hidden).
  • Give each player their 12 tiles.
  • If fewer than 4 players, remove unused tiles from the game.
  • Place the game round track in the center.
  • Take 9 sapphires and 9 ambers from the bag and place them in the corresponding holes on the round track. These gems serve as both rewards and round counters.
  • Place the hourglass and die within reach.

Round Sequence:

  1. Each player draws a puzzle board from the stack and places it face up in front of them.
  2. The youngest player rolls the die and flips the hourglass.
  3. The die result determines which puzzle each player must complete on their board.
  4. Players quickly select the tiles indicated by the die and fit them exactly into the light-colored placement area.
  5. The first player to complete the puzzle shouts “Ubongo!”
  6. Other players continue until the hourglass runs out.
  7. When the timer ends, all players must stop immediately.

Second-Chance Round:

  • If no player completes the puzzle before time runs out, flip the hourglass and try again.
  • If still no one finishes, the round ends with no rewards.

Rewards:

  • 1st to finish: takes one blue sapphire from the round track plus one random gem from the bag.
  • 2nd to finish: takes one brown amber from the round track plus one random gem from the bag.
  • 3rd and 4th finishers: each take one random gem from the bag.
  • Players who don’t finish receive no gems that round.

At the end of the round, remove the awarded sapphires and ambers from the track to keep count of rounds.

End of Game:

After 9 rounds (when all sapphires and ambers are gone from the track), players total the points from their collected gems:

  • Ruby (red) = 4 points
  • Sapphire (blue) = 3 points
  • Emerald (green) = 2 points
  • Amber (brown) = 1 point

The player with the highest total wins.

Tie Breaker:

If players tie, they play a sudden-death round with one puzzle. The first to complete it wins.

Solo Variant:

Alternatively, time how fast you can finish a set number of puzzles and try to beat your record.

Use a stopwatch or the Play It Smart app timer.

Try to complete as many puzzles as possible in a set time (5, 10, or 20 minutes).
