Official Upwords Rules

Last Updated on November 3, 2025 by The Official Game Rules Team

Upwords is a fast-paced, 3D word-building game for 2 to 4 players. Similar to Scrabble but with a twist, you score points not just by spelling words on the board but by stacking letters on top of others to create new words and increase your score. With tiles stacked up to five high, clever strategy and wordplay lead to big points and even bigger comebacks.

How to Play Upwords

Objective:

Build and stack words to earn the most points by the end of the game.

Components

  • 1 plastic gameboard with 8×8 grid
  • 4 plastic tile racks
  • 64 plastic letter tiles
  • Paper and pencil (for scoring, not included)
  • Dictionary (for challenges, optional)

Setup

  1. Turn all tiles letter-side down and mix them up to form the draw pile.
  2. Place the gameboard in the center of the table.
  3. Each player takes a rack to hold their tiles.
  4. Draw one tile each — the player with the letter closest to A goes first. Return those tiles and reshuffle.
  5. Each player draws 7 tiles to start.

Keep a dictionary nearby to settle spelling or legality challenges.

Upwords Gameplay

On Your Turn

Each turn consists of three simple steps:

  1. Play a word – Create or modify a word using one or more of your tiles.
    • Words must read left to right or top to bottom, never diagonally.
    • Your first word must cover at least one of the four center squares.
    • You may either form a new word or change an existing one by stacking letters.
  2. Score your word – Count points based on the number of letters and stacks (see Scoring below).
  3. Draw new tiles – Refill your rack back to seven tiles.

Play continues clockwise.

Building Words

You can create words in two ways:

1. Form New Words

Place letters across or down to form a word connected to an existing one.

  • Example: Use the “D” in MOOD to build DEAR downward.
  • All touching letters must form valid words (e.g., the “N” in NET and ON).
2. Stack Letters

Stack tiles to change existing words and form new ones.

  • You can only stack one tile per column per turn.
  • You cannot stack the same letter on itself (e.g., an “A” on an “A”).
  • Stacks may be up to five tiles high.
  • At least one letter from the original word must remain visible when changing it.
  • You can build a new word and change another word in the same turn.

Example: Stack a “W” on “M” to turn MOOD into WOOD, then stack an “L” on “D” and a “P” on “R” to change WOOD and DEAR into WOOL and LEAP.

Plurals

You cannot simply add “S” to make a plural. However, if your new word connects to another that becomes plural (e.g., adding PLUS to make NETS), both words count for scoring.

Scoring

A. Flat Words

If your word is only one tile high, score 2 points per letter.

  • Example: DEAR = 4 × 2 = 8 points.
B. Stacked Words

If your word includes any stacked letters (two or more tiles high):

  • Score 1 point per letter plus 1 point for every tile beneath each letter.
  • Example: WOOD has one stacked tile under the “W,” so total = 5 points.
C. Bonuses
  • “Qu” Tile Bonus: +2 points if used in a flat word (one tile high).
  • Full Rack Bonus: +20 points if you use all 7 tiles in one turn.
D. Multiple Words

If your play creates multiple words, score each separately.

  • Shared letters count toward both words.
E. Penalties

At the end of the game, subtract 5 points for every unplayed tile.

Illegal Words

You may only play words that appear in the dictionary and meet these conditions:

  • No capitalized words (proper nouns)
  • No hyphenated words
  • No apostrophes
  • No abbreviations or symbols
  • No prefixes/suffixes that can’t stand alone
  • No foreign words (unless included in your dictionary)

Challenging a Word

If a player plays a word you believe is misspelled or illegal, you may challenge it immediately before the next turn begins.

  • Check the dictionary for confirmation.
  • If the word is invalid, remove the tiles and the player must either replay or pass.

Passing Your Turn

You may pass at any time. Sometimes it’s strategic to skip a turn to open up better scoring options later.

Exchanging a Tile

You may exchange one letter tile instead of playing.

  • Place the unwanted tile face down, draw a new one, then mix the old tile back into the draw pile.
  • You forfeit your turn when exchanging.

Ending the Game

The game ends when:

  • A player uses all their tiles and no tiles remain in the draw pile, or
  • No player can make a legal word and the draw pile is empty, or
  • All players pass consecutively.

Each player subtracts 5 points per unused tile.
The player with the highest total score wins.

Letter Distrubution

The image displays the Upwords letter distribution, showing which letters and the "QU" tile have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 tiles in the game.

Solo Play

You can also enjoy Upwords solo.

  • Follow the same rules and score yourself each round.
  • You may exchange up to five tiles without penalty.
  • The game ends when all tiles are used or no more moves are possible.
Try to beat your previous high score each time!

Strategy Tips

  • Plan ahead to make multi-word plays and rack up big points.
  • Think vertically — stacking increases both points and options.
  • Don’t rush to use high letters like Q or Z; save them for bonus opportunities.
  • Keep track of which tiles are already stacked high to spot better placement zones.
