How to Play Bananagrams

Overview

Players: 1–8
Contents: 144 letter tiles (called the Bunch)

Game Setup

  • Place all 144 tiles face down in the center of the table. This pile is called the Bunch.
  • Each player draws tiles based on the number of players:
    • 2–4 players: 21 tiles each
    • 5–6 players: 15 tiles each
    • 7–8 players: 11 tiles each
  • Keep your tiles facedown until the game begins.

Starting the Game

  • When everyone is ready, any player says “Split!”
  • All players flip their tiles face up and begin creating their own word grid — similar to a personal crossword puzzle.
  • Words must connect horizontally (left to right) or vertically (top to bottom).
  • You can rearrange your own grid as often as needed.
  • There are no turns. Everyone plays simultaneously.

Peel, Dump, and Win

Peel
  • When a player uses all their current tiles in a valid grid, they say “Peel!”
  • That player takes one tile from the Bunch — and so does every other player.
Dump
  • Struggling with a tough letter? Say “Dump!”
  • Place one unwanted tile back in the Bunch (facedown), then draw three new tiles as a replacement.
  • Dumping is optional and can be done as often as needed.
  • Other players do not draw when someone dumps.

Ending the Game

  • When there are fewer tiles left in the Bunch than there are players, continue play until someone places their last tile.
  • That player calls “Bananas!” and the game pauses for a word check.
  • If all words in the player’s grid are legal (no misspellings, no proper nouns), they win.
  • If there’s a mistake, they’re declared the “Rotten Banana” and are out of the game. Their tiles go back into the Bunch and play resumes for the others.

Optional Variants

Best Of Series

Want to play multiple rounds? Try a “best of 5” or “best of 10” tournament format.

Banana Smoothie (Relaxed Mode)
  • Divide all tiles evenly among players, keeping them facedown.
  • There’s no Peeling or Dumping in this version.
  • Players play as usual, and the first to finish their grid wins.
  • If no one finishes, the player with the fewest unused tiles wins.
Banana Café (Quick Games on the Go)
  • Great for restaurants or travel.
  • Each player takes 21 tiles from the pouch.
  • Play with Dumping allowed, but no Peeling.
  • First player to complete their grid calls Bananas! and wins.
Banana Solitaire (Single Player Mode)
  • Start with 21 tiles and build your grid.
  • Draw one tile at a time (like Peeling) as needed.
  • Challenge yourself to finish all 144 tiles or try building the fewest possible words.
  • Use this as a relaxed solo game or a way to sharpen your skills.

Tip:

Advanced players are encouraged to create and invent their own Bananagrams-inspired variations.
