Last Updated on July 20, 2025 by The Official Game Rules Team

Blokus XL is played just like the original Blokus, but with a larger board (20×20 instead of 14×14), giving players more space and extending gameplay slightly. Here’s a complete and clear guide on how to play Blokus XL:

How to Play Blokus XL

Objective

Be the player who places the most pieces (or the most total squares) on the board by the end of the game.

Components

  • 1 XL Game Board (20×20 grid)
  • 84 pieces total: 21 pieces in each of 4 colors (Red, Blue, Yellow, Green)

Setup

  1. Each player chooses a color and takes all 21 of that color’s pieces.
  2. Determine who goes first. Play continues clockwise.
  3. The first piece each player places must cover one corner of the board.

Game Rules

Placing Pieces
  • Players take turns placing one piece at a time onto the board.
  • A new piece must:
    • Touch at least one corner of one of your previously placed pieces.
    • Not touch any edge of your own pieces (only corner-to-corner contact is allowed).
  • You can touch or share sides with pieces of other players.
  • Once placed, a piece cannot be moved.
End of Game
  • The game ends when no players can make a legal move.
  • If you cannot play on your turn, you must pass.

Scoring

Basic Scoring
  • Count the number of squares in your unplayed pieces.
  • The player with the fewest squares remaining wins.
Advanced Scoring (Optional)
  • Each square left = –1 point
  • Bonus: +15 points if you placed all 21 pieces
  • Extra bonus: +5 points if your last piece was the smallest (single square)

Variants

2-Player Game
  • Each player controls 2 colors and takes alternating turns for each color.
  • Final scores are the total for both colors combined.
3-Player Game
  • One color is shared and played in rotation. Only individual scores count; the shared color is ignored for scoring.

Blokus XL plays the same as regular Blokus, just on a larger board—which allows for longer, more strategic games with more room to maneuver.
