How to Play Family Charades
What’s Included
- 250 Cards
- 100 Classic Charades Cards
- 150 Switch Charades Cards
- 1 Sand Timer (60 seconds)
- 1 Scoring Pad
- Pencil
CLASSIC CHARADES (Ages 5+, 3+ Players)
Goal
One player acts while everyone else guesses. Both the actor and correct guessers earn points. The player with the highest score wins.
Setup
- Shuffle the Classic Charades deck and place it face-down.
- Decide how long you want to play—ideally long enough for each player to act at least twice.
- The youngest player becomes the first actor.
How to Play
1. Draw a Card
The actor secretly draws the top card.
Each card has three charade phrases, labeled 1, 2, and 3.
2. Guessers Choose the Phrase
The guessers call out which number the actor must perform: 1, 2, or 3.
For non-readers, it’s recommended to always choose #1.
3. Start the Timer
Flip over the 60-second sand timer.
The actor now performs the chosen phrase silently.
Actors may:
- Move
- Mime
- Use gestures
Actors may not:
- Speak
- Mouth words or letters
- Draw letters in the air
- Point to objects in the room
4. Keep Performing New Cards
As soon as someone correctly guesses the charade:
- The actor draws a new card
- Performs the same-numbered phrase
- Continues until time expires
5. Score Points
For every correctly guessed charade:
- The actor earns 1 point
- The correct guesser earns 1 point
To track guesses easily, the actor should hand the guessed card to the correct player.
Record all points at the end of the turn.
Winning Classic Charades
After everyone has acted at least twice (or whenever you decide to stop), the player with the most points wins.
Encourage a victory bow for dramatic flair.
SWITCH CHARADES – TEAM MODE
Goal
Teams compete head-to-head.
Each round, one team acts together while one teammate guesses.
The team with the most points wins.
Setup
- Shuffle the Switch Charades deck and place it face-down.
- Divide players into two teams of at least 3 players. Uneven teams are fine.
- Each player should take two turns as the guesser by the end of the game.
If teams are uneven, one player takes an extra turn. - Choose a team to act first.
If you don’t have six players, simply use the Switch deck but follow the Classic Charades rules instead.
How to Play
1. Assign the Guesser
The acting team chooses one player as the guesser.
All other teammates act together.
2. Draw a Card
The acting group draws the top card and keeps it hidden from the guesser.
Each card contains three numbered phrases.
3. Other Team Chooses the Phrase
The non-active team chooses whether the actors must perform phrase 1, 2, or 3.
4. Start the Timer
Flip the 60-second sand timer and begin acting.
Group acting is allowed to include:
- Gestures
- Body language
- Movement
- Noises or humming
Actors may not:
- Speak
- Mouth words
- Draw letters in the air
Only one pass is allowed per turn.
5. Keep Going
When the guesser calls out the correct phrase:
- Draw a new card
- Continue acting the same-numbered phrase
Act and guess as many as possible before time runs out.
6. Alternate Teams
After time expires, record the score and give the other team their turn.
Winning Switch Charades
Each correct guess is worth 1 point.
After all guessers have taken two turns, the team with the highest total score wins.
Examples of Charades
Here are examples of the types of actions you might encounter:

- “Cleaning the bathroom”
- “Dancing like a robot”
- “Flying a kite”
- “Brushing a giant’s teeth”

Family-friendly themes keep the game accessible for young players.
Strategy Tips
For Actors
- Start with broad gestures (big movements help).
- Break long actions into smaller steps.
- Use your whole body—kids especially respond well to exaggerated acting.
- Practice category-style hints using gestures (big, tall, small, fast).
- In Switch Charades, coordinate who acts what part to avoid confusion.
For Guessers
- Call out quick guesses to narrow down ideas.
- Don’t overthink—most phrases are everyday actions.
- Watch for repeated shapes or motions actors emphasize.
- In team mode, encourage teammates and communicate clearly without giving hints.
