Just One is a cooperative party game where players work together to help one person guess a secret word using carefully chosen clues. Each round, everyone writes a single-word clue—but identical or invalid clues are removed before the guess is made. The challenge is being helpful without being obvious.

The goal is simple: guess as many mystery words correctly as possible and aim for a perfect score by the end of the game.

How to Play Just One


Game Contents

Inside the game box, you’ll find:

  • 110 Mystery Word cards
  • 7 easels
  • 7 dry-erase markers
  • 1 rulebook

Setup

  1. Shuffle all cards and draw 13 cards at random.
  2. Place these cards face down in the middle of the table to form the deck.
  3. Return the remaining cards to the game box; they won’t be used.
  4. Give each player one easel and one dry-erase marker.
  5. Randomly choose the first active player (also called the guesser).

Objective of the Game

As a group, help the active player correctly guess the chosen word on the mystery word’s card using valid, non-identical clues. The game ends when the deck runs out, and your final score is based on how many words were guessed correctly.


Gameplay Overview

The game is played over multiple rounds. Each new turn follows the same four phases:

  1. Choose the Mystery Word
  2. Write Clues
  3. Compare and Cancel Clues
  4. Guess and Resolve

1. Choose the Mystery Word

  • The active player draws the top card of the deck without looking at it.
  • They place the card on their easel so only the other players can see the five words.
  • The active player selects a different number between 1 and 5.
  • The corresponding word becomes the mystery word for this round.

If some players don’t understand the word, they may request the active player to choose a new number.


2. Clue Selection

All players except the guesser secretly write one single-word clue on their easel. No communication is allowed.

A “single word” can include:

  • A digit (e.g. 7)
  • An acronym (e.g. SMS)
  • An onomatopoeia (e.g. BANG)
  • A special character (e.g. $)

Invalid Clues

The following clues are not allowed:

  • The mystery word written differently (e.g. Shurt for Shirt)
  • A foreign language version of the word
  • A word from the same word family (e.g. Princess for Prince)
  • An invented word (e.g. swee’ting for cake)
  • A word with the same pronunciation but a different meaning
  • Obvious spelling mistakes meant to bypass rules

3. Comparing Clues

  • The active player closes their eyes.
  • All other players reveal and compare clues.
  • Identical clues and invalid clues are canceled by tipping the easel over.

What Counts as Identical?

  • Exactly the same word
  • Singular/plural forms
  • Gender variants (actor / actress)
  • Spelling mistakes
  • Variants from the same word family

If all clues are canceled, the mystery word’s card is removed from the game immediately.


4. The Guess

The active player opens their eyes and sees the remaining clues.

  • They may make only one guess
  • They may also choose to skip

Outcomes

  • Correct guess: place the card face up next to the deck
  • Wrong guess: return this card and one additional card from the deck to the game box
  • Skip: return only this card to the box

If the pronunciation matches the mystery word, the guess counts as correct.


End of Turn

  • Erase all clues from the easels.
  • The player to the left of the active player becomes the new active player.
  • A new turn begins.

End of the Game

The game ends when the deck is empty.

Count the number of successfully guessed cards and check your score:

Variant: 3-Player Game

In a 3 player game:

  • Each player uses two easels
  • Each non-active player writes two clues
  • Identical clues are still canceled as normal

This keeps the difficulty balanced despite fewer players.

  • Think lateral: metaphors, private entertainment, or indirect associations work best
  • Balance clarity with uniqueness—too obvious or too abstract both fail
  • Watch for identical words and subtle overlaps
