How to Play KerPlunk

Overview of KerPlunk

KerPlunk is designed for 2 to 4 players and is suitable for a wide range of ages. The objective is straightforward: avoid collecting marbles. Each player claims a section of the game base, and any marbles that fall into that section count against them. When the game reaches the end of the game, the player with the fewest marbles is declared the winner.

What makes KerPlunk memorable is the physical structure itself. The tube fills with marbles held up by a loose lattice of sticks. As sticks are removed, gravity slowly takes over, creating fun moments of anticipation and surprise.

Game Contents

  • 1 Tube (Left and Right halves)
  • 21 Plastic Sticks
  • 24 Marbles

Players: 2–4
Ages: 5 and up

Warning: Choking hazard – contains small marbles. Not suitable for children under 3 years.

Objective

Remove sticks from the tube as carefully as possible while causing the fewest marbles to fall. When the game ends, the player with the lowest number of marbles wins.

Assembly

  1. Snap the left and right tube halves together securely.
  2. Cut the plastic sticks free from their frame using safety scissors.
  3. Keep the instruction sheet for future reference.

Setup

  1. Place the assembled tube upright on a flat surface.
  2. Insert the sticks into the holes around the tube. Push each stick straight through so it comes out the opposite side.
  3. Place the sticks randomly, crisscrossing them in different directions to form a loose web inside the tube.
  4. Drop all the marbles through the opening at the top of the tube.
  5. The marbles should rest on top of the sticks. If any fall through to the base, simply place them back in the tube until all marbles are supported by the sticks.

Kerplunk Gameplay

  1. Choose a starting player. Turns then continue clockwise (to the left).
  2. On your turn:
    • Slowly rotate the tube so the side facing you is clear. Be careful not to shake or tilt the marbles.
    • Select one stick and carefully pull it all the way out of the tube.
    • The first stick you touch is the one you must remove. You may hold the tube steady with your other hand.
  3. Set the removed stick aside. Play passes to the next player.

Dropped Marbles

  • Any marbles that fall during your turn must be collected and placed in front of you.
  • A turn officially ends only when the next player touches the tube or a stick.
  • If marbles fall before the next player touches anything, those marbles still count toward the previous player’s total.

End of the Game

The game ends when all marbles have fallen out of the tube.
Each player counts the marbles they collected.

The player with the fewest marbles is the winner.
