How to Play Tapple

Quick Reference

  • Goal: Be the last player each round and collect three category cards.
  • Ages: 8+
  • Players: 2–8
  • Timer: 10 seconds per turn

Object of the Game

In Tapple, players race against the 10-second timer to name words that fit a given category—each starting with a different letter on the Tapple wheel. The last player remaining in a round wins the category card. The first player to collect three category cards wins the game.

Game Contents

  • 1 Tapple Wheel (Touch-Activated Letter Eliminator)
  • 36 Category Cards (with 144 total categories)
  • Instructions

Setup

  1. Prepare the Tapple Wheel:
Flip the wheel over to access the battery compartment, category card storage, and power switch. Insert batteries as shown in the instructions, then close the compartment securely.
  2. Turn on the Timer:
Switch the timer to the “ON” position.
  3. Place the Wheel:
Set the Tapple wheel upright in the center of the table (or pass it around for larger groups).
  4. Get the Cards Ready:
Remove the category cards and place the stack within easy reach of all players.

Gameplay

  1. Choose a Category:
The player whose middle initial is closest to “A” goes first. Draw a category card and select one category for the round.
    • The Blue/White side of the card offers easier categories.
    • The Red/Yellow side is more challenging.
    • A “Player’s Choice” card lets you make up your own category.
  2. Start the Round:
Announce the category, press the timer button in the center of the wheel, and begin.
  3. Take Turns Naming Answers:
On your turn, you have 10 seconds to:
    • Say a valid answer that fits the category and starts with an available letter.
    • Press that letter on the Tapple wheel (it’s now locked out).
    • Hit the timer to reset it, then pass the turn.
If you run out of time or give an invalid answer, you’re eliminated from the round. Example: If the category is Cars & Trucks, acceptable answers for “J” could include Jeep, Jetta, Jalopy, or Junker. Creativity is encouraged!

Elimination Rules

You’re out of the round if you:

  • Fail to answer before the timer buzzes.
  • Give an answer that doesn’t fit the category (decided by a majority vote).
  • Press a letter before confirming a valid answer.

When a player is eliminated, the next player immediately taps the timer to keep the round going. Continue until only one player remains—that player wins the category card.

Overtime Rules

If every letter has been used and multiple players are still in, it’s overtime!

  • Reset all letters and draw a new category.
  • Each remaining player must give two valid answers using two different letters within the 10 seconds.
  • The last player remaining wins both cards.
If more than one player survives, continue with another overtime round requiring three answers until a single winner remains.

Winning the Game

Play rounds until one player collects three category cards to win.
For longer games, play to four or five cards instead.
