How to Play Azul Duel

Overview

Azul: Duel is a two-player tile-drafting and pattern-building game. Players take turns selecting and placing tiles to score points while strategically blocking their opponent. The game introduces new mechanics tailored for head-to-head play, making each decision impactful.

Components

  • 1 Game Board (featuring the shared marketplace)
  • 2 Player Boards (one per player)
  • 120 Tiles in 5 colors (24 of each color)
  • 1 Bag (for drawing tiles)
  • 1 Score Track (to keep track of points)
  • 1 First Player Marker (to indicate the starting player each round)
  • 4 Reserve Markers (used for storing tiles)
  • 1 Rulebook

Setup

  1. Place the game board in the center between both players.
  2. Each player takes a player board and places it in front of them.
  3. Place all tiles into the bag and shuffle them thoroughly.
  4. Draw tiles from the bag and place them onto the factory displays and central row as indicated in the rulebook.
  5. Determine the first player randomly and give them the first player marker.

How to Play

The game is played over multiple rounds, with each round consisting of the following phases:

1. Selecting Tiles
  • On their turn, a player must take all tiles of one color from either a factory display or the central row.
  • If taking from a factory, any remaining tiles are moved to the central row.
  • If taking from the central row, the player must also take the first player marker if they are the first to select from this row (this means they will start the next round).
2. Placing Tiles
  • After selecting tiles, the player must place them on their player board.
  • Tiles can be placed directly into an open pattern line or stored in the reserve area.
  • Each row on the pattern board corresponds to a specific number of tiles required to complete it.
  • Players cannot place more tiles in a row than its designated space allows.
3. Scoring
  • When a row is completed, one tile from that row is moved to the corresponding space on the player’s board, scoring points.
  • The remaining tiles from that row are discarded.
  • Points are scored based on placement, adjacency, and completed rows/columns.
  • Additional bonuses are awarded for completing specific patterns or achieving color sets.
  • Any tiles taken that cannot be placed result in penalty points.
4. End of Round
  • The round ends when all tiles have been drafted and placed.
  • Players check for completed rows, columns, and patterns, then score accordingly.
  • The first player marker moves to the player who took it from the central row, and a new round begins with tile refilling.

End of Game

  • The game ends when a player completes a certain number of rows or when the tile bag is exhausted.
  • The final score is calculated, including bonuses for completed patterns and penalties for unused tiles.
  • The player with the most points wins.

Special Rules

  • Reserve Markers: Players may use their reserve to hold tiles temporarily, but exceeding the limit incurs penalties.
  • Blocking Strategy: Players can intentionally take tiles to prevent their opponent from completing a high-scoring pattern.
  • Advanced Scoring: Additional points are awarded for creating unique arrangements and completing color-based objectives.
  • First Player Advantage: The first player each round has more choices but may also face strategic disadvantages if not careful.

Winning the Game

  • The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins.
  • In case of a tie, the player with the most complete patterns wins.
