How to Play The White Caslte

Objective

Score the most points by placing workers in key areas of the castle, gaining influence, collecting resources, and completing strategic actions across three rounds.

Components

  • 1 Main Board (featuring Himeji Castle and various action areas)
  • 4 Player Boards
  • 36 Dice (in three colors)
  • 72 Workers (18 per player in 3 types: Samurai, Courtiers, and Gardeners)
  • 4 Reference Cards
  • Various tokens (lanterns, coins, provisions, etc.)
  • Round marker and score markers

The White Castle Game Overview

Each round, players:

  1. Roll dice and place them in pools.
  2. Take turns choosing one die at a time and placing it on the main board to perform an action.
  3. Actions depend on the die’s color, value, and placement location.
  4. At the end of three rounds, final scoring occurs.

Worker Types

Each worker corresponds to one main section of the board:

  • Samurai (red): Military area – gain strength and defend the castle.
  • Courtiers (blue): Palace area – gain influence and prestige.
  • Gardeners (green): Garden area – generate income and resources.

The White Castle Dice System

  • Dice come in three colors: red, green, and blue.
  • Each die’s color relates to a specific area, but you can use any color in any region (at a penalty or bonus).
  • The value of the die determines the action strength or the cost.

Dice are drafted from a central area on the board. You will take one die on your turn, place it in a slot on the main board, and execute the corresponding action.

Action Areas

1. Military District (Red Zone)
  • Deploy samurai to gain strength or achieve dominance.
  • Advance on the strength track to earn bonuses and score points.
  • Control specific zones for ongoing benefits.
2. Palace District (Blue Zone)
  • Place courtiers in rooms of the castle.
  • Earn prestige through influence.
  • Gain ongoing effects by placing workers in key spots.
3. Garden District (Green Zone)
  • Place gardeners to generate resources.
  • Develop income engines by unlocking tiles.
  • Manage lanterns and complete personal board rows.

Player Board

Each player board includes:

  • A personal garden with tile slots.
  • Storage areas for coins, provisions, and lanterns.
  • Action bonuses that unlock as you place workers.

Managing your own board efficiently is key to generating long-term benefits and scoring opportunities.

Lanterns and Missions

  • Lanterns allow you to take stronger actions or place extra workers.
  • Completing mission cards (private objectives) can give endgame points or bonuses.

Round Structure

Each round includes:

  1. Setup Phase: Roll and pool dice.
  2. Action Phase: Players take turns drafting and placing dice.
  3. Cleanup Phase: Reset, remove unplaced dice, and advance the round marker.

After three rounds, the game ends.

Scoring and Winning The White Castle

You score points for:

  • Influence in the palace
  • Strength in military
  • Garden and board development
  • Completed mission cards
  • Unused lanterns and resources
  • Majority bonuses in areas

Highest total score wins.

Solo Mode

The game includes a solo mode with an AI opponent who drafts dice, blocks spaces, and competes for majorities. It includes automated actions based on a deck or flowchart.

Strategy Tips

  • Time your lantern use to trigger combos.
  • Balance all three districts rather than focusing on just one.
  • Use lower-value dice early to reserve strong spaces for later.
  • Build your engine through efficient worker placement.

The White Castle is a beautifully tight game of tactical decision-making and resource management. It rewards clever planning and precise timing, especially with limited actions across only 12 turns.
