Objective:

The objective of Toss Across is to be the first player or team to get three of their symbols (X or O) in a row—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally—on the Toss Across target board.

Components:

  • Toss Across target board: A game board with 9 rotating panels that display X, O, or a blank side.
  • Bean bags: Typically 6 bean bags, 3 for each player or team, in different colors for differentiation.

Setup:

  1. Position the Target Board:
    • Place the Toss Across target board on a flat surface where all players have a clear line of sight and access to it.
    • Ensure there is enough space for players to toss the bean bags from an appropriate distance.
  2. Divide into Teams:
    • Divide players into two teams: X and O.
    • Each team takes their corresponding set of 3 bean bags.

Gameplay:

  1. Decide Who Goes First:
    • Determine which team will go first by any random method (e.g., coin toss, youngest player, etc.).
  2. Tossing the Bean Bags:
    • Players take turns tossing their bean bags at the target board, trying to flip the panels to their team’s symbol (X or O).
    • Each player tosses one bean bag per turn.
    • The game continues in turns, with each team alternating tosses.
  3. Flipping the Panels:
    • When a bean bag hits a panel, it will flip to the next side (X, O, or blank).
    • Players aim to flip the panels to their team’s symbol and create a row of three.
  4. Winning the Game:
    • The game is won when a player or team gets three of their symbols (X or O) in a row—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally—on the target board.
    • If all bean bags are tossed and no player has achieved three in a row, players retrieve their bean bags and continue playing until a winner is determined.

Additional Rules:

  • Distance: Agree on a standard distance from which players must toss the bean bags to ensure fair play.
  • Interference: Players should not interfere with the target board or bean bags after they have been tossed.
  • Scoring Variations: For added challenge, you can keep score over multiple rounds, awarding points for each win (e.g., 1 point per win) and playing to a set score (e.g., first to 5 points wins the game).

Strategy Tips:

  • Aim Carefully: Focus on flipping panels that are strategically important for blocking your opponent or completing your row.
  • Defensive Play: Sometimes it’s more beneficial to flip a panel to block your opponent from getting three in a row than to pursue your own row.

Toss Across is an engaging and dynamic game that encourages hand-eye coordination, strategic thinking, and friendly competition. It’s ideal for family gatherings, parties, and playdates, providing endless fun for participants of all ages.
