Last Updated on March 14, 2025 by The Official Game Rules Team

Tripoley is a classic multi-player card game that combines elements of poker, rummy, and a board game. Players aim to win chips by forming poker hands, completing rummy-like sequences, and landing on specific spaces on the Tripoley board. It’s a game of chance and strategy, where players must balance risk and reward to accumulate the most chips.

How to Play Tripoley

Setup

  • Players: 2-9 players (best with 4-7)
  • Equipment:
    • Tripoley mat or board (or designate sections on a table)
    • Standard 52-card deck (no jokers)
    • Chips for betting

Each player starts with an equal number of chips. The board has sections labeled for different bets, such as Ace of Hearts, King of Hearts, Queen of Hearts, Jack of Hearts, Ten of Hearts, 8-9-10 Sequence, and Pot.

Gameplay

Tripoley is played in three phases:

1. The Setup and Betting Phase

  • Each player places one chip into each betting section on the board.

2. The Hearts Phase (Collecting Chips)

  • The dealer deals out all 52 cards to players (some players may get one extra card).
  • Players look at their hands and collect chips if they have specific hearts:
    • Ace of Hearts wins the corresponding section’s chips.
    • King, Queen, Jack, or Ten of Hearts each win their section’s chips.
    • 8-9-10 of any suit (straight flush) wins the sequence pot.

3. The Poker Phase (Best Poker Hand)

  • Players use their best five-card poker hand from their dealt cards.
  • A round of betting occurs (similar to Poker), with players wagering chips.
  • The winner of the best poker hand takes the pot.

4. The Rummy Phase (Tripoley or Michigan Rummy)

  • The dealer starts by playing the lowest card in their hand.
  • Players must play the next consecutive number in the same suit if they have it.
  • This continues until no more cards can be played.
  • The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the remaining chips in the center pot.

Winning the Game

The game continues for a predetermined number of rounds or until players run out of chips. The player with the most chips at the end wins.

This combination of games provides a variety of play styles, keeping the game engaging and dynamic. Tripoley is a great game to add to your classic game nights.
