Last Updated on October 8, 2025 by The Official Game Rules Team

In Ditch the Witch, players roll dice to pass “witches” around the table — hoping to send them to others before they pile up in front of you! The goal is simple: avoid collecting 11 witches before your opponents do. Fast, unpredictable, and full of hilarious reversals, Ditch the Witch is the perfect quick party dice game where luck and timing rule the night.

The box art features a cartoonish black cat in the foreground, standing on its hind legs and performing a high kick towards the upper right. Above the cat, a green-skinned witch with a black hat and bright red hair is depicted mid-air, having seemingly been kicked or knocked off her broomstick. A black bat flies near the title, and a classic carved pumpkin is in the upper right corner.

In the upper left, the game box stands upright. The box features a purple and orange design with a cartoon black cat kicking a witch off a broomstick.

In front of the box are the dice components. There are seven large, orange dice with black illustrations and text, and one purple six-sided die. Some faces on the orange dice show images like a pumpkin or a black cat, and words like "WITCH". Below these are four smaller, darker, multi-sided dice.

To the right, there is a large, orange drawstring cloth bag with the silhouette of a witch flying on a broomstick printed in black. Behind the bag, a small set of game instructions is visible.

Object of the Game

Be the last player without 11 witches in front of you.
Each round, players roll to collect or redirect witches — trying to send them away (“ditch them”) before the magic backfires and you get stuck with them.

Setup

  1. Each player takes one 12-sided Counter Die, set to zero witches to start.
  2. Place all Witch Dice and the Decision Die in the center of the play area.
  3. Decide who goes first — you can choose randomly, or the youngest player may start.

Four of the dice are multi-sided (D10) with a dark brown or black body and red numbers (1-10). One of these black dice also clearly displays a red silhouette of a witch flying on a broomstick.

The fifth die, positioned in the lower right, is a six-sided, bright purple die. Visible faces on the purple die feature text in bright yellow: "Left" and "Choose," with "Right" partially visible.

How to Play

The game is played in rounds, with each player taking a turn rolling dice to determine who gains witches.

1. Roll the Witch Dice

On your turn, roll all 6 Witch Dice.
The number of witch symbols rolled determines how many witches you’re dealing with this round.

Example: If you roll 3 witch symbols, there are 3 witches in play this turn.

A close-up, high-angle photograph shows a group of six orange dice with black markings, which are components of the Ditch the Witch game. Each die is six-sided and has a shiny, bright orange color with carved or printed symbols and numbers in black.

Visible faces include Halloween-themed icons like a ghost, a black cat, a pumpkin (jack-o'-lantern), and a witch flying on a broomstick, as well as an icon of a bat and the word "WITCH". The dice also show numbers, with faces displaying digits 1 through 6 next to the symbols.

2. Roll the Decision Die

Next, roll the Decision Die to see where the witches go.

Each side of the die gives a different outcome:

Decision Die ResultEffect
LeftPass all witches to the player on your left.
RightPass all witches to the player on your right.
Your ChoiceYou choose any player to receive the witches.
YourselfYou’re stuck with them — add them to your total!

Players track their witch total by adjusting their Counter Die accordingly.

3. Next Player’s Turn

After the witches are assigned, the next player (clockwise) takes their turn.
Play continues until someone reaches 11 witches.

Winning the Game

  • The round ends immediately when a player reaches 11 witches on their Counter Die.
  • That player is eliminated from the game.
  • The remaining players continue until only one player remains — the winner!

Alternatively, you can play multiple short rounds, keeping score of who wins the most games.

Optional Rules

  • Quick Game: Play to 7 witches instead of 11.
  • Endurance Mode: Keep all players in the game and track who receives 11 witches the most times over multiple rounds — that player is the “Ultimate Witch Magnet.”
  • More Players: Add additional 12-sided Counter Dice to include up to 8 players or more.

Conclusion

Ditch the Witch is a light, fast-paced dice game where every roll can change your fate. Just when you think you’ve escaped the curse, one unlucky roll can send the witches flying back your way! Perfect for families, parties, or spooky game nights, it’s all about laughter, quick reactions, and a little witchy luck.
