- Shuffle the deck of cards and deal four cards to each player.
- Place the remaining cards facedown in the center of the ship where indicated.
- Distribute Cannonballs:
- Each player chooses a color and takes six woolen cannonballs of that color.
- Give each player an eye patch (optional but highly recommended for fun).
- Place the Game Components:
- Place the black cannonball, “X Marks the Spot” token, and the die in a central area accessible to all players.
Once everything’s in place, you’re ready to start firing!

Fire in The Hole! Gameplay
Each round, players take turns performing two actions:
- Draw one card from the deck.
- Play one card from their hand.
Cards dictate how you can fire your cannonballs, add chaotic effects, or sabotage your opponents. Your goal is to be the first player to land four cannonballs in a row orthogonally (up/down or left/right—not diagonally) on the ship.
Firing Cannonballs
- To launch a cannonball, keep your elbow on the table at all times.
- If a cannonball misses the ship’s grid, you may retrieve and re-throw it until it lands in a valid space.
- Cards will often require you to roll the die before firing. The result determines whether the action affects:
- Just you (Solo Fire), or
- All players (All Fire).
All Fire means everyone must perform the same challenge—simultaneously or one at a time.
Card Types & Special Effects
Each card introduces a unique twist. Here’s a breakdown by color:
Red Cards
- Sabotage opponents by removing their cannonballs.
- Swap cannonball colors with other players.
- Steal scoring positions.
Purple Cards
- Draw extra cards.
- Fire two cannonballs at once.
- Launch the black cannonball, which can knock out existing cannonballs already on the ship.
Green Cards
- Force players to fire with their non-dominant hand.
- Rotate the ship to change the layout.
- Block a ship space with the “X Marks the Spot” token.
- Steal a card from another player’s hand.
Winning the Game
The first player to land four cannonballs in a straight orthogonal line (not diagonally) on the ship wins the game!
