How to Play Pasts, Passion, and Pistols

Game Overview

  • Players: 6 required suspects (up to 8 total with optional roles)
  • Length: Approximately 3 hours
  • Objective:
    • For most players: Identify the murderer.
    • For the murderer: Avoid suspicion and escape detection.

This is not a board game with turns and pieces. Instead, it is structured roleplay guided by character booklets and an audio CD that controls the pacing of the evening.

Note: if you want to include food as part of the gameplay (it enhances the atmosphere of the game!), checkout the full Dinner & Menu Planning Guide at the bottom of this page.

Characters

There are eight possible roles:

The Six Required Suspects

  • Mama Rosa – Pepi’s wife
  • Angel Roni – Pepi’s daughter
  • Marco Roni – Pepi’s son
  • Rocco Scarfazzi – Pepi’s brother from Italy
  • Tara Misu – Rocco’s fiancée
  • Bo Jalais – Angel’s fiancé

Optional Extra Guests (leave out these characters for a 6-player game)

  • Clair Voyant – Rosa’s astrology advisor
  • Father Al Fredo – The Italian priest

Important:

  • The game must have the six suspects.
  • The two extra roles are optional and used only if more than six guests attend.
  • Even if optional roles are present, they participate in questioning.

What Comes in the Box

  • Party Planner (Host guide)
  • 8 Invitations
  • 8 Place Cards
  • 8 Character Booklets
  • 6 Secret Clue envelopes (#1–#6)
  • 1 Audio CD (with narration and final solution)

Before the Party

1. Assign Characters

  • Match guests to roles based on the invitation descriptions.
  • Keep one role for yourself as the host.
  • Do not read the character booklets ahead of time.
  • Do not listen to the CD in advance.

Mystery and surprise are essential—even for the host.

2. Encourage Costumes

Guests may:

  • Dress fully in character
  • Or simply bring a prop
  • Or dress casually and rely on roleplay

Costumes are encouraged but not required.

3. Prepare Materials

You should:

  • Provide pens and notepads
  • Set out place cards
  • Distribute the correct Secret Clue envelopes (unopened)
  • Keep the CD ready

How the Character Booklets Work

Each booklet includes:

  • WHAT THE WORLD SEES – Public persona (used for introductions)
  • THE TRUTH – Private background (never revealed unless necessary)
  • Round sections divided into:
    • Facts You Will Reveal
    • Facts You Will Reveal Only After Challenged
  • STOP notices to prevent reading ahead

Critical rule:
Players must not read past a STOP section until instructed.

How to Start the Game

When everyone arrives:

  1. Hand out the correct Character Booklets.
  2. Allow time to read:
    • RULES
    • INTRODUCTION
  3. Remind players:
    • Do not read beyond STOP.
    • Keep booklets private.
  4. Have each guest introduce themselves using WHAT THE WORLD SEES.
  5. Play the first section of the CD to reveal the crime.

Now the mystery begins.

Core Gameplay Rules

Truth & Questioning Rules

  • Players may not lie.
  • Players may be evasive.
  • If directly challenged, they must tell the full truth.
  • Secrets in “Reveal Only After Challenged” must remain hidden unless asked directly.

At some point, the murderer will discover (via their booklet) that they committed the crime. From then on, their goal is survival.

Game Structure

The game unfolds in three rounds.

Round Structure Overview

Each round follows the same pattern:

  1. Dialogue (scripted roleplay moment)
  2. Review new personal information
  3. Open questioning among players
  4. CD summary from narrator
  5. Short break (food course change is ideal)

Full Round Breakdown

FIRST DIALOGUE

After the opening CD segment:

  • All characters read and perform their scripted dialogue.
  • This sets the tone and conflict.

ROUND ONE

Players:

  • Read their Round One section.
  • Use “Facts You Will Reveal” as discussion prompts.
  • Only reveal secret facts if challenged directly.

Then:

  • Resume CD for summary.
  • Narrator highlights key discoveries.

SECOND DIALOGUE

All characters perform the next scripted exchange.

ROUND TWO

Same structure:

  • Review personal updates.
  • Question others.
  • Strategically reveal information.

CD concludes the round with summary.

THIRD DIALOGUE

Final scripted confrontation scene.

ROUND THREE

  • Review final personal information.
  • Continue questioning.
  • Pressure intensifies.
  • The murderer must now avoid exposure carefully.

Optional Final Statements

After Round Three, each player may:

  • Read their final statement from their booklet
  • OR skip directly to accusations

Important:
One final statement is false—the murderer’s.

Accusations Phase

Each guest:

  • Announces who they believe committed the crime.
  • Explains why.

Once all accusations are made:

  • Play the final CD segment.
  • The narrator reveals the murderer and full solution.

Secret Clue Envelopes

There are six labeled clues.

  • Give each to the named suspect at the beginning.
  • They remain sealed.
  • Open only when instructed in the booklet.

These clues significantly shift suspicion.

Host Responsibilities

As organizer, you must:

  • Control pacing
  • Enforce STOP rules
  • Ensure no one reads ahead
  • Ask if all necessary facts have been revealed before ending a round
