How to Play Pegs and Jokers

Objective of the Game

The object of the game is to move all five of your pegs clockwise around the board from your HOME position (the diamond-shaped area), safely into your SAFE area (the L-shaped zone at the end of your track).

The first team (or individual, in two-player games) to get all five pegs into their SAFE area wins.

Players & Setup

Number of Players

Pegs & Jokers is typically played in teams of two, though a two-player variation exists.

  • 2 players:
    • 4 boards
    • 2 decks of cards (jokers removed)
    • Individual play (no teammates)
  • 4 players:
    • 4 boards
    • 2 decks of cards with jokers
    • Two teams of two (partners sit across from each other)
  • 6 players:
    • 6 boards
    • 3 decks of cards with jokers
    • Three teams of two
  • 8 players:
    • 8 boards
    • 4 decks of cards with jokers
    • Four teams of two

Rule of thumb: Add one deck of cards for every two players.

Each player chooses five pegs of a unique color. Teammates use colors or shapes that clearly identify them as partners.

Components Needed

  • Pegs & Jokers game boards
  • Pegs or marbles (five per player)
  • A deck of cards (with jokers, unless playing two-player)
  • Discard pile space
  • Draw pile placed face down in the center

Dealing the Cards

  1. Shuffle the deck thoroughly.
  2. Deal five cards face down to each player.
  3. Place the remaining cards face down in the center to form the draw pile.
  4. The player to the dealer’s left takes the first turn.

On your turn, you:

  1. Play one card from your hand
  2. Perform its action
  3. Place it in the discard pile
  4. Draw one card from the draw pile

Penalty for Forgetting to Draw

If a player fails to draw a card after making a play:

  • On their next turn, they must draw two cards
  • They cannot look at or play those cards immediately
  • They must play using the cards already in their hand
  • The drawn cards become usable on their following turn

Making a Play & Getting Out of HOME

Before moving around the board, you must get a peg out of HOME and onto the COME OUT spot.

You may use:

  • Ace
  • Any face card (Jack, Queen, King)
  • Joker

These cards allow a peg to leave HOME. The peg must land exactly on the COME OUT spot—no exceptions.

If a Joker is used to get out, that peg cannot move further during that turn.

Card Values & Movement

Once you have a peg in play, cards move pegs based on their card value:

10Move 10 forward
JackMove 11 forward (or get out of HOME)
QueenMove 12 forward (or get out of HOME)
KingMove 13 forward (or get out of HOME)
JokerWild: replace any opponent’s peg with your own

You must always use the full count of the card—partial moves are not allowed.

Joker Rules Explained

Jokers are the most powerful cards in the game:

  • A Joker may replace any opponent’s peg on the board
  • The opponent’s peg is sent back to HOME
  • Your own peg takes its place
  • Jokers can also be used to get out of HOME

Used wisely, jokers can completely swing the game.

Peg Interaction Rules

  • If your peg lands on an opponent’s peg, their peg returns to HOME
  • If your peg lands on your partner’s peg, your partner’s peg is sent to their IN spot
  • You may not pass or land on your own peg
  • Pegs in the SAFE area are completely protected
  • You cannot move backward into the SAFE area—even with an 8

Entering the SAFE Area

  • You must enter the SAFE area by exact count
  • If your only move would overshoot the SAFE area, you must pass it and continue around the board
  • An 8 or 9 may allow you to reposition backward to avoid a full loop

Once all five of your pegs are safe, you may begin helping your remaining teammate move their pegs.

Team Play Rules

  • You must move your own pegs until all five are safe
  • After that, you may move your partner’s pegs
  • Teammates may not communicate about cards in hand
  • No table talk, signals, or hints of any kind

Strategy Tips

  • Avoid stopping on corners, opponent COME OUT spots, or IN spots
  • Save jokers for maximum disruption
  • Use split cards (7s and 9s) to reposition multiple pegs
  • Block opponents’ safe paths whenever possible
  • Sometimes the best move is helping your partner instead of advancing yourself

Winning often comes down to timing, patience, and reading the table.

Variations & House Rules

Pegs & Jokers has many regional variations:

  • Larger games with up to 10 players
  • Modified joker abilities
  • Different dealing rules
  • Reduced peg counts for faster play

Feel free to adapt the game rules to fit your group—the most important rule is to have fun.
