Slay the Spire: The Board Game is a cooperative deckbuilding game for 1–4 players based on the acclaimed video game by Mega Crit. Players take on the roles of unique heroes climbing a perilous spire, battling enemies, building powerful decks, discovering relics, and ultimately trying to defeat the boss at the top of each Act. It combines strategic cardplay with the risk-reward tension of a rogue-like game.

How to Play Slay the Spire


Components Overview

  • 4 Character sets (Ironclad, Silent, Defect, Watcher) with minis, decks, and boards
  • 450 sleeves, 381 player cards, and 112 small item cards (Relics, Potions, etc.)
  • Encounter, Elite, Boss, Event, Curse, Status, and Reward decks
  • Main and HP boards, map tokens, cube tokens, boot meeple, die
  • Dividers, reference cards, and the Merchant board

Game Setup

  1. Choose Characters
    Each player selects a character and takes their matching board, starter deck, reward decks, and mini.
  2. Prepare the Player Board
    • Place red, blue, and black cubes on max HP, 3 Energy, and 0 Block respectively.
  3. Organize Decks
    Shuffle all decks except Summons, Daze, and Status. Place the appropriate decks face-down.
  4. Prepare the Map
    • Use Act I board.
    • Randomly draw a map layout.
    • Shuffle and place map tokens on corresponding spaces.
    • Place the character mini at the bottom start point.
  5. Select a Boss
    • Roll a die to randomly select a boss for the Act.
    • Place boss face-down on its space on the map.
  6. Set Up Initial Encounter
    Draw a “1st Encounter” card for each player and place it for the first combat.
  7. Neow’s Blessing
    • Shuffle the Neow’s Blessing deck.
    • Each player gets a red bonus and chooses one of the blue options.
  8. Solo Setup (if needed)
    Solo players get an extra relic and the Loaded Die.

Character Abilities

Each hero has unique mechanics:

  • Ironclad – High HP, gains Strength and synergizes with Exhaust.
  • Silent – Specializes in Poison and Shivs.
  • Defect – Manipulates Orbs (Lightning, Frost, Dark).
  • Watcher – Uses divine Stances (Calm, Wrath) and Miracles.

Your Area and Deck

  • Draw Pile – Created by shuffling your deck.
  • Discard & Exhaust Piles – Cards go here after play or if exhausted.
  • Item & Power Zones – Relics, potions, and powers go here when activated or acquired.

The Map and Movement

  • Players climb the spire via a branching path.
  • Each room contains encounters: monsters, elites, bosses, events, campfires, or merchants.
  • After resolving a room, players choose a connected room above and proceed.

Combat Setup and Structure

Combat follows a structured format:

1. Combat Setup

  • Each player gets an enemy in their row.
  • Summons appear based on enemy cards.
  • Elites/Bosses use special setup rules.

2. Combat Round

Each round has two phases:

Player Turn (Simultaneous or Sequential)

  1. Start of Turn
    • Reset energy and block.
    • Draw 5 cards.
    • Roll die to determine enemy behavior and relic triggers.
  2. Play Phase
    • Players play cards using Energy, activate relics, and use potions.
    • Discuss strategies collaboratively.
    • Target enemies as needed.
  3. End of Turn
    • Discard all remaining cards (unless Retained).
    • Trigger any “End of Turn” abilities.

Enemy Turn

  1. Remove enemy Block.
  2. Resolve enemy actions row by row.
  3. Move any cube-action enemies along their tracks.

Combat ends when all enemies are defeated.


Rewards & Deck Building

After combat, players:

  • Draw from their reward decks (base and rare).
  • Can upgrade, transform, or remove cards.
  • Gain gold, relics, and potions.
  • Use campfires to heal or upgrade cards.
  • Visit merchants to buy items or remove cards.

Card Types

  • Attack – Deal damage.
  • Skill – Utility effects (block, draw, etc.).
  • Power – Lasts for the rest of the fight.
  • Curse – Negative cards added to your deck.
  • Status & Daze – Temporary effects from enemies.

End of Combat Steps

  1. Trigger “End of Combat” effects.
  2. Gain rewards based on room type.
  3. Reset decks and player boards.
  4. Switch player rows before next encounter.

Winning and Losing

  • Win: Defeat the boss at the end of the Act.
  • Lose: If any player’s HP reaches 0, the game ends.

You can play through 1–3 Acts, with the option to unlock a 4th Act later.


Replayability and Variants

  • Unlocks: Completing objectives unlocks new cards, bosses, and Ascension levels.
  • Ascension: Adds harder conditions over 13 tiers.
  • Achievements: Track challenges and special wins.
  • Daily Climb: A rotating custom mode with modifiers.
