How to Play The Chameleon

Objective

  • Non-Chameleon players: Identify the Chameleon without revealing the secret word.
  • The Chameleon: Stay hidden, blend in, and try to figure out the secret word before getting caught.

Setup

  • Gather 4–6 players.
  • Shuffle one Chameleon Card into a matching set of Code Cards.
  • Deal one card face down to each player.
  • The player with the Chameleon Card is the Chameleon for that round.

Gameplay

1. Reveal Topic and Code

  • The dealer flips over a Topic Card.
  • Roll the two dice (yellow and blue).
  • Each non-Chameleon player uses the dice result to find a coordinate on their Code Card.
  • This coordinate points to a secret word on the Topic Card.

The Chameleon does not know the secret word.

2. Give One-Word Clues

  • Starting with the dealer, each player says one word related to the secret word.
  • Go clockwise around the table.
  • No hesitation or discussion during this phase.

Important:

  • Too obvious → the Chameleon might figure out the word.
  • Too vague → others may suspect you’re the Chameleon.

3. Discussion Phase

After all clues are given:

  • Players openly discuss and debate who the Chameleon might be.
  • Look for suspicious clues, hesitation, or mismatched answers.

4. Vote

  • Each player points to who they think is the Chameleon.
  • The player with the most votes reveals their card.

If you are wrong:

  • The Chameleon escapes and wins the round.

If you are correct:

  • The Chameleon gets one final chance to guess the secret word.
    • If correct → Chameleon still wins.
    • If incorrect → the group wins.

5. Next Round

  • The Chameleon becomes the new dealer.
  • Shuffle and deal new cards.
  • Start again with a new topic.

Optional Scoring

Play multiple rounds and track points:

  • Chameleon escapes: +2 points (Chameleon only)
  • Chameleon caught but guesses word: +1 point (Chameleon)
  • Chameleon caught and fails: +2 points (all other players)

First to 5 points wins.

Player Count Variations

3 Players

  • If caught, the Chameleon gets two guesses at the secret word.

7–8 Players

  • After clues are given, flip the Topic Card face down to increase difficulty.

Tips & Strategy

For Non-Chameleon Players:

  • Choose clues that are specific but not obvious.
  • Watch for players giving generic or safe answers.

For the Chameleon:
