How to Play Boggle

Objective

Find as many unique words as you can before the timer runs out. You only score points for words not found by any other player.

• 16 Letter Cubes
• 1 Sand Timer (90 seconds)

Boggle Setup

1. Place all 16 letter cubes randomly into the grid base.
2. Take the sand timer from the lid and place it where everyone can see.
3. Secure the lid on the grid and place the game in the center of the table.
4. Each player needs a pen and a sheet of paper.

Boggle Gameplay

1. Shake the grid thoroughly to mix up the cubes.
2. Gently tilt or wiggle the unit until all cubes settle into a letter-facing-up position.
3. When everyone is ready, flip the sand timer and remove the lid to reveal the letter grid.
4. All players simultaneously search for words and write them down on their paper before time runs out.
5. When the timer ends, everyone must stop writing.
6. Players then take turns reading their word lists aloud and score their results based on the scoring rules.

Word Rules

To be valid, words must meet the following criteria:

• At least three letters long.
• Letters must be adjacent to each other in the grid, either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
• Letters must be connected in order and each cube can be used only once per word.
• Plural and verb forms are allowed (e.g., RUN and RUNNING), as long as they are listed individually.
• You may find and score multiple words from a single string (e.g., EAR, PEA, and PEAR).
• Words must be found in an agreed-upon English dictionary.
• Proper nouns (e.g., Canada, Alex) are not allowed.
• Homonyms (e.g., TEAR as a verb and a noun) count only once.
• The Qu cube counts as two letters (e.g., QUILL).

Scoring Boggle

After all lists are read aloud:

• Duplicate words (words found by more than one player) are eliminated from all lists—no one scores for them.
• Count and score your remaining words:

4 letters	1 point
5 letters	2 points
6 letters	3 points
7 letters	5 points
8+ letters	11 points

Tips for Scoring:

• Words spelled the same but found in different areas of the grid count only once.
• You may score both the singular and plural form of a noun (e.g., HAT and HATS), if both are written down.

How Long is a Game?

That’s up to the players. You can:

• Play a single 90-second round
• Agree on a set number of rounds
• Race to a target score (like 50 or 100 points)
• Or play until everyone is “Boggled out”

Optional: For a longer game, flip the 90-second timer again to make each round 3 minutes.

Winning the Game

The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins.
