How to Play Box of Bunco

Objective

The goal of Bunco is to score the most points by rolling dice to match the current round’s target number. Players aim to complete rounds and win Bunco’s (a specific target score) to accumulate the highest points.

Components

  • 12 dice (4 per table if playing in a group)
  • 1 Bunco scorepad
  • 1 Bell (optional, for added excitement)
  • 1 Timer (optional, for timed rounds)

Setup

  1. Players: The game can be played with 12 or more players, divided into groups (tables) of 4.
  2. Tables: Arrange players into tables of 4 and provide each table with 4 dice, a scorepad, and a pencil.
  3. Rounds: Determine the number of rounds to play (typically 6 rounds, one for each number 1 through 6).

Gameplay

  1. Starting a Round:
    • Each round is associated with a specific target number (1 through 6). For example, in Round 1, the target number is 1; in Round 2, the target number is 2, and so on.
    • The round starts when the game host announces the target number.
  2. Rolling the Dice:
    • All players at each table roll their dice simultaneously.
    • Players try to roll the target number for that round. For example, in Round 1, players aim to roll as many 1s as possible.
    • Players keep any dice that show the target number and re-roll the rest, trying to accumulate more target numbers in their roll.
  3. Scoring:
    • Each target number rolled earns points: 1 point per die that shows the target number.
    • Players keep rolling and scoring until they can no longer roll the target number.
    • The player who accumulates the most target numbers wins the round and scores points. If a player rolls three of a kind of the target number (e.g., three 1s in Round 1), they win a Bunco (a special win) and score a higher number of points (typically 21 points for a Bunco).
  4. Ending a Round:
    • The round ends when a player at a table reaches a predetermined score (e.g., 21 points) or after a set time limit if using a timer.
    • Players record their scores on the scorepad.
  5. Changing Tables:
    • After each round, players rotate tables so that everyone has the opportunity to play with different people. Typically, the winners stay at their table while others rotate.

Winning the Game

  • Total Score: After all rounds are completed, tally the scores from each round.
  • Highest Score: The player with the highest total score at the end of the game wins.

Additional Rules

  • Bunco: Rolling three of the target number in a single roll is known as a Bunco. It scores extra points and can often mean an immediate win for that round.
  • Tie-breakers: In case of a tie, use the Bunco score or the total number of Bunco’s achieved to determine the winner.

Strategy Tips

  • Focus on the Target Number: Aim to roll the target number as often as possible.
  • Keep Rolling: Take advantage of re-rolls to maximize your score for each round.

Box of Bunco is a lively and engaging game that encourages social interaction and excitement. Enjoy the fun of rolling dice and aiming for those Bunco wins!
