How to Play Liar’s Dice (Complete Rules, Tips, and Variations)
Introduction
Liar’s Dice is a classic bluffing and deduction game where players try to outsmart each other by guessing what’s hidden under everyone’s dice cups—or completely lying about it.
It’s all about confidence, reading opponents, and knowing when to push your luck. Depending on the version, players either compete with individual dice sets or a shared rotating hand.
There are two main ways to play:
- Single Hand Liar’s Dice (most common version)
- Common Hand Liar’s Dice (poker-style version)
Both versions rely heavily on bluffing, risk-taking, and reading other players.
Single Hand Liar’s Dice Rules
Setup
- Each player gets 5 standard six-sided dice
- All players roll their dice at the same time
- Dice are hidden under cups or hands after rolling
- Players look at their own dice but keep them secret
Starting the Game
To choose the first player:
- Everyone rolls 2 dice
- Highest total goes first
- Play continues clockwise
How to Play
The game is played in rounds. Each round is about bidding and bluffing.
Step 1: Make a Bid
The first player starts by announcing a guess about all dice in play.
A bid includes:
- A number face (like 2s, 5s, etc.)
- A quantity (how many of that face exist across all players)
Example:
- “Five 2s”
This means the player believes there are at least five dice showing the number 2 across the entire table.
Step 2: Raise or Challenge
Each next player must choose one of two actions:
Raise the Bid
They can increase the previous bid by:
- Increasing the quantity, or
- Increasing the face value (depending on house rules)
Example:
- “Six 2s”
- “Five 4s”
OR Challenge
They can call out the previous player and say they are lying.
Resolving a Challenge
When someone challenges:
- All players reveal their dice
- The total number of matching dice is counted
Outcomes:
- If the bid was correct or lower than reality → bidder wins
- If the bid was too high → challenger wins
Losing Dice
The loser of the round:
- Removes one die from the game
- Places it in front of them
Once a player loses all dice:
- They are eliminated
Next Round
- The loser of the previous round starts the next bid
- If eliminated, the next clockwise player starts
Special Endgame Rule
When only 2 players remain with 1 die each:
- Bids are made on the combined total of both dice
Winning the Game
The winner is the last player remaining with at least one die.
Common Hand Liar’s Dice Rules (Poker Version)
This version removes hidden cups and replaces bluffing dice totals with poker-style hands.
Setup
Each player needs:
- 5 dice
- Around 10 counters or chips
Poker Hand Rankings (Highest to Lowest)
- Five of a kind
- Four of a kind
- Full house
- High straight (2–6)
- Low straight (1–5)
- Three of a kind
- Two pair
- One pair
- Highest single die
How to Play
Step 1: Determine First Player
- Everyone rolls 5 dice
- Best poker hand goes first
- Play continues clockwise
Step 2: Make a Declaration
The first player rolls their dice secretly and announces a poker hand.
They may:
- Tell the truth
- Bluff and lie
- Announce a stronger or weaker hand
Example:
- Player rolled three of a kind but says “Full house”
Step 3: Accept or Challenge
The next player chooses:
Accept
- Pass the dice (unrevealed) to the next player
- That player may reroll and must declare a stronger hand
Challenge
- Reveal the dice immediately
Challenge Results
If a challenge happens:
- If the declared hand was too strong → liar pays a counter
- If the challenger was wrong → challenger pays a counter
Eliminations
- Players lose counters when they lose challenges
- When a player runs out of counters, they are eliminated
Winning the Game
The winner is the last player remaining with counters.
Game Variations
Single Hand Variants
Build Up Mode
- Players start with 1 die
- Winning a challenge gives you more dice instead of losing them
- Reaching 6 dice eliminates you
Wild Ones
- Ones count as wild and can match any face (unless ones are the bid)
Bidding Variants
Different groups may allow:
- Any higher quantity OR higher face
- Only higher quantity bids
- Mixed rules combining both systems
Poker Version Variant
- Players may roll up to 3 times before locking in their hand
- They may keep selected dice between rolls
- Final declared hand must always be stronger than the previous one
Tips for Winning
- Don’t always bid honestly—mix bluffing with truth
- Watch patterns in how opponents raise bids
- Pay attention to hesitation before challenges
- Early rounds are for gathering information
- Late rounds are for aggressive bluffing
Liar’s Dice rewards confidence as much as probability.
Conclusion
So those are the liar’s dice rules! A fast, tense bluffing game where deception is just as important as luck. Whether you’re tracking hidden dice totals in the Single Hand version or bluffing poker hands in the Common Hand version, every round is a psychological battle.
