Pente is a classic strategy board game played on a 19×19 grid, similar to Go or Gomoku. The goal is to either align five stones in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally) or capture five pairs of an opponent’s stones. Players take turns placing stones, with captures occurring when two opponent stones are flanked on both sides. The game is easy to learn but offers deep strategic gameplay, making it a favorite among abstract strategy enthusiasts.

How to Play Pente
Objective:
To win Pente, you must either capture five pairs of your opponent’s stones or align five of your own in a row—vertically, horizontally, or diagonally.
Components:
- Pente game board (19×19 grid)
- 18 glass stones per player (two different colors)
- Drawstring storage bag
Setup:
First, each player selects a color and takes their set of stones. Next, place the board between both players and decide who will go first. Traditionally, the player with clear stones takes the first turn.
Gameplay:
On each turn, players place one stone on any empty intersection. The game begins with the first stone placed in the board’s center. After that, players can position stones on any unoccupied spot. To keep the game fair, players alternate turns.
How to Win:
You can claim victory in two ways:
- By aligning five stones in a row—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
- By capturing five pairs of your opponent’s stones.
Capturing Stones:
Capturing happens when you trap two of your opponent’s stones between two of your own.
For example, if the board shows XOOX, the player using X captures the two O stones. When a capture occurs, those stones get removed and added to the capturing player’s collection.
Advanced Rules:
- Tournament Opening Rule: The first player places their stone in the center, while the second player must place theirs on one of the four center points.
- Turn-Based Position (TBP): To keep the game balanced, players continue taking alternating turns after the first two moves.
Winning Strategies:
- Block your opponent before they can align five stones.
- Create multiple threats to force your opponent to defend in different areas.
- Set up captures by positioning your stones carefully to trap your opponent’s pieces.
With strategy, quick thinking, and adaptability, you can master Pente and outmaneuver your opponent!
