How to Play Spicy Farkle (Farkel)

What You Need

  • 6 standard six-sided dice
Each die should have one face marked with red pips, so that across the six dice, there’s exactly one red side for each die face (⚀ through ⚅).
  • Paper and pencil for scoring.

How to Play

Each player takes turns, rolling dice and trying to score points. A turn can include multiple rolls, but push your luck too far and you might farkle!

On Your Turn:

  1. Roll all 6 dice.
  2. Set aside (or “freeze”) one or more scoring dice (see Scoring below) and add the value to your turn total.
  3. If you roll and get no scoring dice, it’s a farkle. Your turn ends, and you score zero for that turn.
  4. If you did score, you may reroll the remaining dice to try for more points. You must freeze at least one scoring die on each roll.
  5. If you freeze all six dice, you’ve “turned the corner” and may roll all six again to keep building your turn total. But be warned—farkling at any point wipes out the entire turn’s score!
  6. You may end your turn voluntarily at any time (as long as you haven’t farkled) and add your turn total to your overall score.
  7. Pass the dice to the next player.

5 of a kind2000
6 of a kind3000
⚀⚁⚂⚃⚄⚅ (straight)1500
Three pairs1500
Two triplets2500

Spicy Dice Rule

If any scoring combination includes one or more spicy dice (red pips), the score is doubled for each spicy die in the combo.

Example:
⚃⚃⚃ (3 fours) normally scores 400. If one of the 4s is a spicy die, the score becomes 800.
⚀⚁⚂⚃⚄⚅ (straight) scores 1500—but if it includes two spicy dice, that becomes 6000 (1500 × 2 × 2).

High Stakes Variant

Add extra drama with this optional rule:
A player may start their turn by rolling the remaining (unfrozen) dice from the previous player’s turn.

  • If they score, they inherit the previous player’s points for that turn and keep rolling.
  • If they farkle, both players lose the entire turn’s score!

Stacking Rule

You can’t combine previously frozen dice with new rolls to form a new set.

Example:
If you freeze a 5 (worth 50), then roll two more 5s later, you can’t count them as a ⚄⚄⚄ (3 fives) triple worth 500. Instead, you score 50 + 50 + 50 = 150 total.

Winning the Game

The game continues until someone reaches 25,000 points. At that point, all other players get one final turn to beat the high score. After the last round, the player with the highest score wins.

Spicy Farkel adds a twist to traditional Farkle and its cousin, Zilch, by raising the stakes with spicy dice and strategic doubling. Whether you’re a longtime fan of dice games or just discovering them, this version brings fresh excitement to game night—no fancy equipment needed, just a few marked dice and a taste for risk.
