Components:
- Game board (a square grid)
- Pawns (one per player)
- Walls (a set number per player)
Setup:
- Each player places their pawn in the center of one edge of the board. Opposite edges are the “goals.”
- Each player receives their set of walls.
Gameplay:
Players alternate turns. On your turn, you must do one of the following:
- Move your pawn: You can move your pawn one space orthogonally (horizontally or vertically, not diagonally) to an adjacent empty square. You cannot jump over walls or other pawns.
- Place a wall: You can place one of your walls on the board. Walls are placed between two adjacent squares, blocking passage. Walls can be placed to block one or both players. You cannot completely enclose a player’s pawn. There must always be at least one open path for each player to their goal.
Winning:
The first player to move their pawn to any square on their opponent’s starting edge (their “goal” line) wins the game.
Strategy Tips:
- Plan your route: Think several moves ahead. Consider the shortest path to your goal and how your opponent might try to block you.
- Block strategically: Don’t just place walls randomly. Try to block your opponent’s most direct path while leaving yourself open routes. A well-placed wall can force your opponent to take a long detour.
- Conserve walls: You have a limited number of walls, so use them wisely. Don’t waste them on blocking paths that your opponent isn’t likely to take anyway.
- Adapt: The board state changes with every move. Be prepared to adjust your strategy as your opponent places walls and changes the maze.
